About Fillings And Root Canal

A Filling In Time; Prevents An Implant In Future

Dental caries also known as tooth decay is one of the most common dental problem and can be easily prevented by maintaining a good oral hygiene. Sugary and sticky foods such as candies, ice cream, chocolates, caramels stick to the tooth surface and without proper cleaning, the remnants of the food debris are then dissolved by the oral flora into acids which damage the hard tissue of the teeth resulting in the formation of caries.

How A Day With Root Canal Treatment Would Turn Out

The tooth that needs to be treated is identified with the help of a localized x-ray known as IOPA. Now, the advanced techniques are low radiation digital RVGs or a panoramic view by OPG or CBCT if multiple teeth are involved. The patient is explained in brief about the procedure.

After the medical history and allergies known, local anesthesic agent is either infiltrated or a block is given at the required site or quadrant to numb the area. When the patient feels tingling sensation or numbness, the dentist would start with the excavation of decay with a small round bur. Once all the decay is excavated, and the pulp chamber is opened, access is made to locate the canals. Number of canals vary from tooth to tooth from a single canal to multiple canals as seen in molar teeth. The infected, necrosed or vital pulp is extirpated by using designed root canal files and broaches. This procedure removes all the infection and the pulp tissue. Now, to prevent any future infection the canal is filled using a bio-inert material.

For this material to be seated the canals are reshaped using a sequential use of root canal files. They also debride the canals. A Dentist may use different types of armamentarium like protapers, files, reamers etc. quick and efficient, cleaning and shaping of the canals. A lubricant is used along with the files for a smooth mechanical procedure.

Additionally, irrigating solutions like sodium hypochlorite, hydrogen peroxide, chlorhexidine, normal saline are used to flush out the debris. Once the canals are cleaned and dried, the dentist needs to seal the canals with various sealants Like zinc-oxide eugenol, resin based sealant. The canals are then filled with filling materials which are plasticized gutta percha. Core build up is done to get the part of anatomy of the tooth structure. Core build up materials are of various types being from basic zinc-oxide eugenol to permanent filling materials like glass-ionomer type 9 and light cure fillings. The average treatment time for each normal tooth is around 15 – 20 mins. Hence it is also possible to complete the treatment for even full mouth within few hours.
